Cybersecurity for First Responders: Free Courses and Certifications You Shouldn’t Miss

I’ve been asked by a few people to share a list of the cybersecurity classes and certifications I’ve taken—particularly the free ones. I thought it would be easier to lay it all out here. These courses aren’t listed in any particular order, but some of them are more urgent than others and should probably be completed as soon as possible.

    ISC² Certified in Cybersecurity (CC)

One of the most essential certifications right now is from ISC². It’s a brand-new certification called the Certified in Cybersecurity (CC). Typically, the exam costs $200, but there’s a special initiative where you can access it for free through the “One Million Certified in Cybersecurity” program.

Here’s what you need to know:

    • The certification costs $200, but there’s a bundle that includes training and certification for $649.
    • If you pass the exam, there’s a $50 membership fee for ISC².
    • Register through ISC², and make sure to apply the voucher code so you don’t accidentally pay the full price.

I’m actually scheduled to take this exam soon, and from my experience so far, the course is really solid. Remember, only a million free slots are available, so it’s best to register as soon as possible.

Cisco Skills for All: Free Cybersecurity Learning Pathways

Next up is Cisco’s Skills for All platform. This is a phenomenal resource packed with free content. While these aren’t formal certifications, they do offer digital badges that you can display on platforms like Credly or Badgr.

    Some recommended courses include:

    • Introduction to Cybersecurity (Free)
    • Cybersecurity Pathway (160 hours)
    • Getting Started with Cisco Packet Tracer – A must for networking fundamentals (2 hours)
    • Network Basics – Crucial for understanding how networks operate
    • Internet of Things (IoT) Essentials – Great for learning about modern connected devices

Though not industry certifications, these courses help build essential knowledge that can boost your resume and cybersecurity skills.

️ FIU Veterans Training Initiative: For First Responders and Veterans

If you’re a first responder, veteran, or transitioning military member, the Florida International University (FIU) Veterans Training Initiative offers incredible courses tailored for you. These classes are highly detailed and provide certificates of completion, though they aren’t formal certifications.

    Courses include:

    • Cybersecurity Foundations
    • Fundamentals of Digital Forensics
    • Network Forensic and Incident Response
    • Mobile Forensics
    • Video and Image Forensics

The course I found particularly valuable was the Fundamentals of Digital Forensics, which covered everything from imaging computers to understanding file types and registry hives.

️ CWCT Cybersecurity Workforce Certification Program (Purdue University)

The CWCT program is a collaboration between several universities, with Purdue University leading the initiative. It offers three distinct training paths with free online cybersecurity courses.

I’m currently pursuing the Digital Forensics Pathway, which includes:

    • CompTIA A+ and Security+ certifications
    • Cisco CyberOps Associate
    • Red Hat Linux System Administrator
    • Computer Forensics
    • Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI)

The best part? They cover the cost for up to three certifications! That’s potentially saving you hundreds of dollars. I’ve already completed several courses, including CompTIA Security+ and plan to tackle the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) next.

Cyber Skills to Work Program: Advanced Cybersecurity Training

Another standout is the Cyber Skills to Work Program. I recently completed their course and earned my CompTIA CySA+ certification, which is focused on cybersecurity analyst roles. This program is also designed for first responders, veterans, and public safety professionals.

    Key courses offered:

    • Network+
    • CySA+ (Cybersecurity Analyst)

The instructors are incredibly knowledgeable, and the program provides practical, hands-on experience—ideal for those looking to dive into Security Operations Center (SOC) roles.

Final Thoughts: Where Should You Start?

If you’re looking to break into cybersecurity—especially as a first responder, veteran, or transitioning military professional—these free and low-cost courses are a great way to start. Here’s my recommended order:

    1. Cisco Skills for All – Quick, accessible, and free foundational knowledge.
    2. ISC² Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) – A must-have entry-level certification.
    3. FIU Veterans Training Initiative – If eligible, this offers deep, specialized training.
    4. CWCT Program (Purdue) – An incredible opportunity to earn fully-funded, industry-recognised certifications.
    5. Cyber Skills to Work Program – Ideal for advanced roles like SOC analysts.

These resources have been invaluable for me, and I hope they help you kick-start your journey into cybersecurity. If you need any guidance or have questions about these programs, feel free to reach out. Stay safe and stay cyber-secure!
