What’s the Best CMMC Compliance Software for DoD Contractors?

Vanta is a strong choice for DoD contractors that already have their security environment and primarily need compliance automation, evidence collection, control mapping, and assessment preparation. Secureframe Defense is better suited to contractors that want a defense-focused CMMC platform with deeper infrastructure and CUI-environment capabilities, while Paramify stands out for CMMC documentation, gap assessment, SSP, POA&M, and SPRS workflows.

Choosing CMMC software is not simply about picking the platform with the most controls or the biggest feature list. The right choice depends on your CMMC level, where Federal Contract Information (FCI) or Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) exists, how your IT environment is built, and how much of the compliance workload you want to automate.

The current DoD CMMC guidance makes this distinction particularly important. For Level 2, organizations are assessed against 110 NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2 requirements, with assessment results and affirmations tied to the Supplier Performance Risk System (SPRS).

A compliance platform can make that work easier. It cannot compensate for missing security controls, an incorrectly defined CUI boundary, or an insecure system.

What is the best CMMC compliance software for DoD contractors?

For most contractors, I would start with Vanta, Secureframe Defense, and Paramify. They solve different parts of the CMMC problem, so the right selection depends more on your environment than on a generic feature ranking.

    SoftwareBest fitMain strength
VantaExisting IT/security environmentEvidence and compliance automation
Secureframe DefenseDefense-focused CUI programsCMMC + infrastructure + monitoring
ParamifyDocumentation-heavy programsSSP, POA&M, gap assessment and SPRS

Vanta is particularly compelling when your organization already has the technical controls and needs a structured way to collect evidence, map controls, identify gaps, and maintain compliance documentation.

Secureframe Defense takes a broader approach. Its current CMMC offering combines compliance workflows with integrations for environments such as Microsoft GCC High, Google Workspace, and Azure, along with SSP, POA&M, SPRS, evidence collection, and monitoring capabilities.

Paramify is worth considering when the biggest problem is organizing the CMMC compliance program itself. Its platform focuses heavily on gap assessment, SPRS scoring, SSPs, policies, procedures, POA&Ms, evidence, and customer responsibility matrices.

How does CMMC compliance software actually help?

CMMC software centralizes the evidence, controls, documentation, remediation tasks, and assessment preparation required to operate a compliance program. It does not automatically implement every technical requirement on your network.

A typical workflow looks like this:

Scope CUI → assess controls → identify gaps → remediate → collect evidence → document → calculate readiness → assess → maintain

That workflow is important because CMMC is not just a documentation exercise.

NIST states that SP 800-171 applies to components of nonfederal systems that process, store, or transmit CUI, as well as components that provide protection for those systems.

The software therefore needs to reflect your actual environment. A beautifully generated SSP that describes controls you have not implemented will not solve the underlying security problem.

Is Vanta good for CMMC compliance?

Yes, Vanta is a strong fit when a contractor wants broad compliance automation and already has an IT environment capable of supporting the required controls.

Vanta’s current CMMC offering includes automated evidence collection, gap assessments, control mappings aligned with NIST SP 800-171 and SP 800-172, continuous monitoring, policy resources, and centralized compliance tracking. Vanta says its platform supports more than 375 integrations for automated evidence collection.

That makes Vanta especially interesting for organizations that have compliance requirements beyond CMMC.

For example, a technology company working as a DoD subcontractor may already have SOC 2, ISO 27001, or other security programs. A broader GRC platform can reduce duplicated compliance work by connecting overlapping controls and evidence.

The trade-off is scope. If you mainly need a CMMC-specific documentation and assessment workflow, a more specialized platform may provide a more focused experience.

Is Secureframe good for CMMC compliance?

Secureframe is a strong option when CMMC is closely tied to the contractor’s infrastructure, CUI boundary, and ongoing operational monitoring.

Secureframe’s CMMC platform supports control mapping, evidence collection, risk management, vendor tracking, SSP and POA&M generation, SPRS scoring, and continuous monitoring. Its Defense offering also advertises connections to federal cloud environments including Microsoft GCC High, Google Workspace, and Azure.

That distinction matters for contractors that do not simply need a compliance dashboard.

Secureframe Defense positions itself as a more complete defense-oriented solution, including infrastructure deployment and CUI-environment capabilities.

However, contractors should verify exactly what is included in their proposed architecture and service package. CMMC scope, CUI handling, cloud services, external service providers, and assessment requirements can materially change what you actually need.

Is Paramify good for CMMC compliance?

Paramify is particularly useful when SSPs, POA&Ms, gap analysis, evidence, and structured compliance documentation are central to the project.

Its CMMC platform provides continuous gap assessment, dynamic SPRS scoring, POA&M management, and automated generation of SSPs, policies, procedures, and customer responsibility matrices.

Paramify also publishes pricing for several CMMC offerings. Its current pricing page lists a $2,000/year Living Compliance Roadmap and a CMMC Level 2 Compliance offering in the $8,000–$25,000/year range, while higher-level documentation packages are listed separately. Actual pricing depends on the selected package and organization.

That published pricing can make Paramify easier to evaluate during the early budgeting stage, although software cost should not be confused with the total cost of becoming CMMC-ready.

What should CMMC compliance software include?

At minimum, look for control mapping, automated evidence collection, gap management, SSP support, POA&M tracking, assessment preparation, and an audit trail.

    The most useful capabilities are:

    1. NIST SP 800-171 mapping
The platform should clearly show how your controls relate to applicable CMMC requirements.
    2. Automated evidence collection
Connecting identity, endpoint, cloud, vulnerability, logging, and other systems can reduce repetitive evidence gathering.
    3. SSP management
Your System Security Plan should describe your actual system and security controls, not simply provide generic boilerplate.
    4. POA&M management
Where POA&Ms are permitted, the platform should track weaknesses, remediation owners, deadlines, and status.
    5. SPRS readiness
The software should help you understand your assessment position and maintain the information needed for the applicable submission or affirmation process.
    6. Continuous monitoring
CMMC is not something you should prepare for once and then ignore. Changes to systems, accounts, configurations, vendors, and controls can affect your posture.
    7. Evidence history
You should be able to determine what evidence supports a control and when it was collected.
    8. Role-based access
Compliance documentation can contain sensitive information. Access should be restricted to people who need it.

Does CMMC software make a company CMMC compliant?

No. CMMC compliance software does not make a contractor compliant by itself. It helps the organization implement, document, monitor, and demonstrate its security practices.

This is one of the biggest mistakes to avoid when evaluating vendors.

Suppose your organization has no effective MFA implementation for systems in scope. Purchasing a platform that has an MFA control in its dashboard does not fix the problem.

The same applies to incident response, vulnerability management, access control, logging, configuration management, media protection, and other requirements.

Think of the software as the management and evidence layer, not the security program itself.

What is the difference between CMMC software and a CUI enclave?

A CMMC compliance platform manages compliance activities, while a CUI enclave is an environment designed to keep CUI within a defined security boundary.

Some solutions increasingly combine both capabilities.

Secureframe Defense, for example, markets a solution that combines CMMC compliance management with CUI environment deployment and management.

This can be useful for a contractor that does not want to redesign its entire corporate network around CUI.

But do not assume that every CMMC software platform provides an acceptable CUI environment. Ask the vendor exactly where CUI can be stored, processed, or transmitted, what cloud services are involved, what responsibilities remain with your organization, and how the boundary is documented.

Does CMMC Level 2 still use NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2?

Current DoD CMMC guidance identifies 110 NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2 requirements for Level 2. NIST has since published SP 800-171 Rev. 3, but contractors should not assume that the newer NIST revision automatically replaces the requirements specified in their applicable contracts.

NIST published SP 800-171 Rev. 3 in May 2024 and it supersedes the older NIST publication from NIST’s perspective.

The DoD’s current CMMC information, however, continues to identify the 110 SP 800-171 Rev. 2 requirements for Level 2.

That distinction matters when evaluating software.

A vendor may advertise support for both revisions, but your compliance program needs to follow the requirements that actually apply to your contract and CMMC assessment.

How should a small DoD contractor choose CMMC software?

Start with your CUI boundary, not the software demo.

Before contacting vendors, answer these questions:

    • Which contracts require CMMC?
    • Are you handling FCI, CUI, or both?
    • Which CMMC level applies?
    • Where is CUI currently stored?
    • Which employees can access it?
    • Which cloud services process or protect it?
    • Do you need a separate CUI environment?
    • What security controls are already implemented?
    • Do you already have an SSP?
    • Do you have an existing POA&M?
    • Who will own the compliance program internally?
    • Will you need a C3PAO assessment?

Then request a demonstration using your actual environment.

Ask the vendor to show you how it handles one complete requirement—from identifying the control through evidence collection, remediation, documentation, and assessment preparation.

That test is more useful than a long feature checklist.

What should you ask a CMMC software vendor before buying?

Ask direct questions about scope, evidence, CUI, documentation, and assessment support.

    CMMC software vendor checklist

    QuestionWhy it matters
Which CMMC levels do you support?Prevents buying software that does not match your contract
Which NIST revision is mapped?Avoids framework-version confusion
Can you collect evidence automatically?Shows how much manual work remains
Can you generate and maintain an SSP?SSP maintenance is a continuing task
How does POA&M management work?Useful for tracking permitted remediation
Where can CUI be stored?Determines whether the platform fits your CUI boundary
Which cloud services are supported?Integration affects implementation effort
What remains our responsibility?Prevents false expectations
How does a C3PAO interact with the platform?Helps prepare for assessment
What happens when our environment changes?Tests whether compliance can be maintained

    One question deserves special attention:

“Can your platform prove that the evidence represents our current environment?”

If the answer is vague, keep asking.

How much does CMMC compliance software cost?

Pricing varies substantially because CMMC software can mean anything from a focused documentation platform to a broader GRC system or a managed CUI environment.

Paramify currently publishes CMMC pricing ranging from $8,000–$25,000 per year for a Level 2 compliance package, while Secureframe publishes a general Fundamentals package starting at $7,000/year and lists its Defense package as quote-based.

Those numbers should not be treated as the total cost of CMMC.

You may also need consulting, remediation, infrastructure changes, endpoint security, identity management, logging, vulnerability management, policies, employee training, assessment costs, and ongoing maintenance.

A cheaper compliance platform can therefore become more expensive if it leaves your team with significant manual work.

What is the biggest CMMC software buying mistake?

The biggest mistake is buying compliance software before defining the CUI environment and assessment scope.

If you do not know which systems are in scope, you cannot accurately determine which evidence needs to be collected.

If you do not know where CUI enters, moves, and resides, you cannot confidently define the boundary.

And if you do not understand your contractual CMMC requirements, you may purchase a platform based on features that do not solve your actual problem.

Start with scope. Then choose the software.

Which CMMC compliance software should you choose?

    My practical shortlist is simple.

Choose Vanta if you already have a mature technology environment and want broad compliance automation, evidence collection, control mapping, and continuous monitoring.

Choose Secureframe Defense if you want a defense-focused platform that brings CMMC compliance workflows closer to the underlying CUI infrastructure and operational environment.

Choose Paramify if your immediate priority is CMMC gap assessment, SSP and POA&M documentation, evidence management, and SPRS-oriented workflows.

None of these choices eliminates the need to implement the underlying security controls or prepare for the applicable assessment.

The DoD currently describes Level 2 as requiring 110 NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2 requirements, with assessment and affirmation obligations that must be maintained over time.

What is the best next step?

Before requesting a software quote, draw your CUI boundary and map the systems that store, process, transmit, or protect CUI. Then compare Vanta, Secureframe Defense, and Paramify against that actual environment.

That single exercise will tell you far more than a vendor feature page.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best CMMC compliance software for DoD contractors?

The right platform depends on the contractor’s environment and CMMC requirements. Vanta is well suited to broad compliance and evidence automation, Secureframe Defense focuses heavily on defense and CUI environments, and Paramify emphasizes CMMC documentation, gap assessment, SSP, POA&M, and SPRS workflows.

Is Vanta good for CMMC compliance?

Yes. Vanta provides CMMC-focused workflows including automated evidence collection, gap assessments, control mappings, policies, and continuous monitoring. It can be particularly useful for contractors that already operate a mature IT environment and want CMMC to fit into a broader compliance program.

Is Secureframe good for CMMC compliance?

Secureframe is designed specifically to support CMMC workflows, including evidence collection, control mapping, SSPs, POA&Ms, SPRS scoring, risk management, and monitoring. Its Defense offering also targets CUI infrastructure and federal cloud environments. Contractors should verify the exact scope and responsibilities of the proposed deployment.

Does CMMC software make you CMMC compliant?

No. Compliance software helps manage controls, evidence, documentation, remediation, and assessment preparation, but it does not automatically implement the required cybersecurity practices. Your organization remains responsible for establishing and operating the applicable controls and maintaining the security of systems within the assessment scope.

How much does CMMC compliance software cost?

There is no single CMMC software price. Current vendor-published examples range from several thousand dollars per year for focused compliance packages to substantially higher costs for broader defense-oriented solutions. Infrastructure, consulting, remediation, assessment, and ongoing security costs are separate considerations.

Does CMMC Level 2 require NIST SP 800-171?

Current DoD CMMC guidance identifies 110 NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2 requirements for Level 2. NIST has since published Rev. 3, but contractors should follow the CMMC and contractual requirements applicable to their specific situation rather than assuming the newer NIST revision automatically changes their obligations.
